Anyone who develops a passion for bunnies quickly learns how important it is to find professionals who understand and care deeply about rabbits.
Before you check out the useful links below, all of the people and bunnies at the Rabbitat would like you to know about these two amazing people:

Dr. David Bourassa is a Rabbitats for Humanity Hero because of his work in spaying and neutering our needy bunnies. A native Mainer, he maintained a private practice in Freeport for 25 years and now provides reliably gentle, expert care to the animals at the Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick. Bunny-savvy vets are rare, and Dr. Bourassa is one of the best.

Francine Evans has managed the Coastal Humane Society shelter for the past four years with incredible energy and compassion. She was born and raised in Canada and has done shelter work for eight years. Thanks for all you do and all you are, Francine! |
And now some great resources...
Before you get a rabbit, learn where and how to find a knowledgeable, trustworthy veterinarian:
The House Rabbit Society has excellent information on How to Find a Good Rabbit Vet in its FAQ section; the article covers screening questions to ask and things NOT to do (for instance, which antibiotics are deadly for rabbits and much more).
VeterinaryPartner.com, a Web site designed by and for veterinarians, has similar food for thought by Susan Brown, DVM in her article Selecting a Veterinarian.
Another good article can be found by the Bunny Bunch people in California. Scroll down past the list of California vets to get to Choosing the Right Veterinarian for Your Pet Rabbit by Jenna Schissler.
Educating yourself...
MediRabbit.com is a brilliant resource for anything to do with rabbit health and contains its own useful articles and links on topics such as rabbit medication and alternative/holistic therapies.
Rabbit Health 101 on the H.A.R.E. (Houserabbit Adoption, Rescue and Education) Web site gives user-friendly answers to questions such as "How can I tell if my bunny is sick?" and divides up common bunny ailments by system: Disorders of the Digestive Tract, Disorders of the Urinary Tract/Renal System, etc.
Where to Go When Your Rabbit Gets Sick on the HopperHome.com site is a great resource that also links to Charky & Ash's Web Site (created in memory of "two mischievous baby bunnies found abandoned in a dumpster"). Aside from the latter's Emergency Kit, there is a Rabbit References section that seems to go on forever and in great detail about every medical topic.
